We found an octopus in a tidepool! As a volunteer at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, I did a tidepool walk with the aquarium staff out near the Outer Cabrillo Beach. Since it was a really low tide, we were able to discover a huge area of rocks with little pools inside it. All the little tide pools were full of colorful marine life including algaes, sea hares, hermit crabs, clams, sea urchins and so on. Although these little creatures were interesting, nothing could be more exciting than finding an octopus! Suddenly, one of the staff members from the aquarium shouted:" I found a baby octopus!" In a flash, everyone gathered around to see this strange creature. While people were taking pictures, a women screamed out: “There is a bigger one underneath that rock!"

Then, I saw a long arm coming out from the rock. Unfortunately, in a blink of an eye, the arm went back under the rock.

The octopuses that we saw were California two-spot Octopuses, which can be identified by their two blue spotted fake eyes near their real eyes. They are very common across the Eastern Pacific and they love eating clams, mussels, crabs, and snails which can be all find in a California tide pool.
